Recyclable Skis: An Interview with Camille Lambert, Founder of ADN

Thursday, 19, December, 2024

What if your skis could be recycled instead of adding to landfill?

That’s the vision driving Camille Lambert’s ADN, a company redefining sustainability in the ski industry.

With a mission to create recyclable skis and a broader vision to tackle composite material waste across industries, ADN is at the forefront of environmentally friendly skiing innovation.

In this interview, Camille shares her journey - from a passion for skiing to developing ground-breaking recycling technology - and offers insights into how skiers can embrace sustainability, the challenges of being a female innovator, and the future of eco-designed sports gear.

Camille Lambert, Founder of ADN

1. What inspired you to launch ADN?

I have always been passionate about skiing, I never thought ski material could not be recycled, when I learnt about it, it was evidence for me to combine my environmental values and my passion by trying to create a recyclable ski.

The composite materials industry lacked real recycling options, and ADN was born from the desire to create a solution that not only matches product performance but is also environmentally responsible.

2. Did you have a scientific background before starting this project? And if not, how did you go about learning the science so that you could develop your technology?

I didn’t have a deep scientific background initially, but I worked closely with experts in the field, attended industry seminars, and did extensive research.

I surrounded myself with the right people to help bridge the gap and ensure that the technology we developed was scientifically sound and effective. I was very autodidact as well and had the heart to create the technology by myself.

3. How would you explain your technology to non-technical skiers?

Our technology allows us to recycle and reuse composite materials, such as those found in skis, revalorize materials into the production chain or in other application.

In simple terms, we eco-design skis to make them recyclable, and after the recycling, we take old materials, give them new life, and ensure that the skis perform at the highest level while reducing their environmental footprint.

4. How did it feel being on *Qui veut etre mon associe* [French version of Dragon’s Den]?

It was an incredible experience. Being able to share my vision for ADN with such a large audience and to receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs was invaluable.

It was both nerve-wracking and exciting, but ultimately, it helped us grow and reach more people who share our mission.

5. You've got a fantastic young female team. What do you think can be done to encourage more young women to choose a career in manufacturing and technological innovation?

It’s important to create environments where women feel supported and empowered. We need to highlight successful female role models in the industry, offer mentorship opportunities, and ensure that young women have access to education in STEM fields. Representation is key to inspiring the next generation.

6. How do you see ADN developing?

We are currently pivoting towards the broader composite materials market, beyond just skis. Our goal is to expand our technology to address global needs in various industries that rely on composite materials, offering sustainable and high-performance recycling solutions across the board.

This shift will allow us to have a bigger impact while still maintaining a strong presence in the ski industry.

7. Skiers will be able to try skis made with ADN technology this winter through your work with SkiSet. What are you trying to find out from this trial?

This trial will help us gather valuable feedback from skiers regarding the performance of the skis in real conditions. We want to ensure that they meet the high expectations of performance while also contributing to the environment.

It’s a key step in refining our product before a wider launch. We are also doing a durability project in which we take back the skis after a minimum of 3 years, to dismantle them and analyse the materials.

8. What one thing could skiers do to be more environmentally friendly?

Skiers can choose sustainable gear, like skis made from recycled materials, and support brands that prioritise eco-friendly practices.

Additionally, they can minimise their environmental impact by staying informed about responsible skiing practices and supporting resorts that invest in green initiatives.

Also, transportation is very impactful, I do think government should have a role by making the mountains more accessible by train.

9. Where is your favourite place to ski?

I love skiing in the French Alps, especially in areas like Les Gets. The scenery is breathtaking, and the challenging slopes offer the perfect balance of adventure and tranquility. I had my first ski medals there and I love to go to remind me of the good old days !

In terms of ambiance, I love going to Avoriaz, this place is such a winter wonderland!
