About Les Deux Alpes, France
Les Deux Alpes - a convenient mere 1hr drive from Grenoble Airport or train station (c.75km) - has a varied après-ski scene that caters for all ages with various inviting bars and clubs. The impressive selection of bars, restaurants, and shops are spread over the mile-long narrow stretch of this bustling resort.
The ski area company SATA Group-AEON, which since 2020 has been responsible for the ski lifts in Les 2 Alpes, is seeking to modernise and transform the ski area into one that is even more accessible to everyone, all year round and for all sporting and non-sporting activities (cycling, mountain biking, hikers, runners, pedestrians, ski tourers, people with reduced mobility, etc.).
After the completion of the Super Venosc gondola lift, the 3 hybrid lifts of Diable, Vallée Blanche and Belle Étoile, the redesign of the lower beginner slopes and the redevelopment of the Vallée Blanche sector, the latest project to finish in 2024 was to replace the Jandri Express gondola (which dates back to 1985) by the Jandri 3S (making the journey to the glacier much faster and more comfortable, originally it took 40 mins and now just 17 mins!). It is the biggest project in the French Alps in the last 10 years. Another new feature of Les 2 Alpes ski area is the renovation of the funicular railway located at 3,100m. The funicular provides an underground lift enabling skiers, pedestrians and other visitors to reach an altitude of 3,400m. This facility is undergoing a complete renovation to ensure a smooth, high-quality experience from the resort to the summits. The building (both inside and out) and its inclined lift have been completely renovated.
Well worth a visit is the charming little village of Venosc at the end of the resort, which has a direct gondola link (8 minutes) from Les Deux Alpes. You also have the small village of Mont de Lans at the entrance to Les Deux Alpes.

Les Deux Alpes ski area
Les 2 Alpes is an internationally renowned resort with a high-altitude ski area. It boasts an excellent snow record, well above-average sunshine conditions and an amazing 200km of snow-sure ski slopes (75% above 2,000m).
The ski area is well suited to all standards of skiers/boarders and most runs are above the treeline. There are two sides to the Deux Alpes ski area: the main sector with the glacier and majority of pistes, and the Vallée Blanche side opposite, with mostly blue and red runs. The main slopes are all above the tree line, with runs suitable for all levels, from beginners to experts. One of the boasts of Les 2 Alpes is that ‘the higher the altitude, the easier the pistes’.
A departure and return to the resort on skis or via the ski lifts (Hybrid-lift of Belle Étoile, Jandri 3S, hybrid-lift of Le Diable). There are 14 km of blue runs between 3,600m and 1,650m (resort).
Above 2,200m, most of the runs are north-facing and the top glacier section guarantees good snow. You also have a 2,300m negative ascent without taking a single lift.
There are 7 sectors:
- High altitude area (3600),
- Toura (2600),
- Diable (2400),
- Fée (2200),
- Crêtes (2100),
- Vallée Blanche (2100),
- Station (1650).
Les Deux Alpes skiing info
Beginners
Beginners will enjoy the magnificent views from the top of the glacier (at high altitude) with wide, easy runs - or the nursery slopes at resort level beside the village. The higher you go in Les 2 Alpes, the more accessible the slopes become. Beginner skiers who start at a low altitude can ski to over 3000 m by the end of their stay and come back down via the Jandri 3S!
A snow front equipped and adapted for beginners, including 3 free ski lifts.
The Vallée Blanche sector is accessible to all thanks to a beautiful green slope and easy-to-access ski lifts (cable car and hybrid lift).
Intermediates
Intermediates are well catered for with a good array of blue and red runs. The top Glacier du Mont de Lans area has some easy slopes with superb views. You can ski all the way from the top down to Mont de Lans (a descent of 2,270m vertical, possibly the world’s biggest on-piste vertical).
Advanced, off-piste & ski touring
There are plenty of black runs and off-piste descents to keep the expert skier busy. For the more adventurous, an outing to the slopes of La Grave is recommended but a guide is necessary.
The extensive off-piste terrain is huge (with five different areas) and challenging. There is a good selection of serious routes with impressive vertical drops.
Les 2 Alpes has created several trails where visitors can try ski touring. One purposely designed route is reserved exclusively for ski tourers. The Parcours des Vallons is well marked and features an 800m altitude difference. Two others are located in the Vallée Blanche area. Ski touring blends downhill skiing and hiking.
